    Winding Down Writer Wares

This week I am saying goodbye to a project of mine that you’ve probably never heard of. It’s called Writer Wares. The idea behind it was simple: I’m entrepreneurial. I’m creative. I like coffee. What if I made coffee mugs for writers specifically? It seemed great! And I dove in, with designs like this: or this: or this one that I’m especially fond of: Why and How The whole endeavor was meant to be as low overhead, low risk as possible for me. I set it all up through a drop-shipper, and opened a website. I had no idea how…

    5 Prewriting Mistakes to Avoid

This week’s video, in continuing with the theme of planning and pre-writing your novel, goes over some prewriting mistakes to AVOID. Here’s the link to the video itself: I mention in passing in the video a mistake I made while prewriting a space opera. That space opera was Stars of Steels and Iron. I wanted to talk more in depth about that mistake because it’s a fascinating case study in how things can go wrong. For some reason, I’d started with PLACE. Because in a space opera, that makes sense? (It does not, in fact, make sense). As someone with…

    Pre Write Your Novel

This week’s video I go over the most important thing you can do BEFORE you start writing your novel – before you even start outlining. If you want to be a planner, it’s important to get a good system in place to Pre Write Your Novel. I’ll be honest, this is the area my process has evolved the most since I first started trying to write an epic fantasy in 2005. How I did it Then I still remember, the very first bit of free-writing I did on the back of a hand-out. We were flying back from the National…

    The Archaeology of E-mail

A couple weeks ago, coming up on my personal deadline for my book I did the most natural thing to do: I cleaned out my e-mail inbox instead. It felt like I was excavating my own personal digital history, in a way that’s more clearly stratified than, say, Facebook is. Of course, there is inevitably filler e-mails – though, interestingly, those filler e-mails are also telling. I only started getting regular YouTube updates in the last few years. I don’t get e-mails about Magic: the Gathering anymore, and that short stint getting esoteric playing cards from Europe. Ah. Those were…

People are Not Obligated to Give You Their Attention

When people who are new to marketing / self promotion start talking to me about what they’re working on, there is one common mistake that I see them make. It’s also a subtle thing – subtle enough that I wanted to talk about it here more thoroughly can I could on Twitter. So here’s a foundational principle you need to understand: People are not obligated to give you their attention. Some guy on his blog, 2020. They are not obligated to click that link. To pick up that book and look at the cover. To play your game demo. To…

    The End is In Sight!

I had a realization this morning: the first draft of this book is almost done. My goal is to finish it by June 20th, but honestly I think I can finish it this weekend. This is a long time coming. I started it at the beginning of 2019, only to realize I was stuck partway through the year. I picked it up again during NaNoWrimo and after precisely 2 days of flailing at the 45kish that was already there, I spent the rest of the month creating a completely redone outline and about 60ish pages of prewriting. The book itself…

How to Grow Your Author Platform

Alright fam, this week’s video is here. I talk about how to actually sustainably grow your author platform. Here’s the link to the video, first of all: For those who are in the TLDW camp, there’s two general methods to grow a platform. I had some extra thoughts about each of them, so, let’s get into it. Method 1: Outreach Seriously whenever people talk about growing their platform, nobody seems to actually discuss the most bare-bones, working-the-pavement way to grow the platform: outreach. Social media is the world’s biggest coffee shop, it’s free, and you can just walk in and…

    What is Author Platform?

This week’s video I go over the foundations of what makes an author platform. Take a look: I want to emphasize is the definition of what a platform is: It is an online presence that does 2 things. It let’s an audience discover you. It let’s you communicate with that audience And the most important thing I want to stress from that video is that the needs of a platform change. It depends on where you are. In some respects, that’s actually why I don’t 100% like the terminology: most of the time when people think about “platform” they think…

10 Fun Books by Black Authors

It’s no secret that the world is a dumpster fire for this week. There’s so much happening it’s hard to keep track of, but the long and short of it is that this week I want to use my platform to try and promote some black authors. To be clear before we go much further, there are a LOT of lists out there right now promoting black authors, and also excellent lists intended to help people educate themselves about the realities of racism. There’s also several lists recommending powerful books like The Hate U Give and Dear Martin. But here’s…

Where Can We Find Your Books?

I’ve had this come up surprisingly often the last couple of weeks, so I thought I would drop a blog post for reference. People have asked me “Where can I find your books?” I’m flattered. I’m also excited to see my books are getting people excited. Unfortunately, you can’t. Not yet. STARS OF STEEL AND IRON, my Firefly x Pacific Rim space opera of a family trying to keep it together after their heist goes wrong, is currently in the query trenches. Truthfully I’ve got maybe another round of queries before it goes to the shelf, but I promise, that…
