This week’s video breaks down the difference between traditional publishing and self publishing.
Pick your Tool
Something I hope that comes across clearly in the video is that these are tools. Self publishing is the perfect tool for some people; traditional publishing works well for others. They also aren’t mutually exclusive – several authors like Gail Carriger manage to both self publish AND traditionally publish.
So, for me? I don’t want to self publish my novels.
For me a big reason why not has to do with the distribution networks traditional publishing has. I firmly believe that gives me a higher ceiling than self publishing. It increases the chance of people randomly coming across my books, it opens the door to libraries having my books (and, as someone married to a librarian, this thought makes me happy).
There is one important caveat: As a professional, I do need to be aware of self publishing and how it works. While I won’t self publish my novels (at least right now), at some point I do think I’ll self publish either some novellas or non-fiction. Mostly that will be a learning exercise, but who knows, maybe that experience would change my mind.
That’s all for this week. Be kind to yourselves.
